Ontario’s first accessibility standard, the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, came into effect on January 1, 2008. Established under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (the “AODA”), the standard states what organizations in Ontario must do to make their goods and services more accessible to people with disabilities.
The Town of Hanover is committed to providing quality goods and services that are accessible to everyone. We believe that effective planning, management and co-ordination of public services assist Hanover and area residents to lead balanced lives, achieve full potential and gain life satisfaction. The Accessible Customer Service Policy approved by Hanover Council ensures that our goods and services are provided in a way that respects the dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity for all people. All Town of Hanover employees have taken training on providing accessible customer service.
The second standard to become law is the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR), which came into force on July 1, 2011. The IASR is divided into sections including General Requirements, Information and Communications Standards, Employment Standards, Transportation Standards and Design of Public Spaces Standards. The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation Policy approved by Hanover Council contains the necessary information to ensure that the standards will be met and addresses how the Town of Hanover will achieve accessibility through meeting the Regulation's requirements.
As part of the IASR, the Town of Hanover has prepared a Multi-Year Accessibility Plan 2013-2018 to implement. The Town of Hanover will be maintaining this plan yearly and providing full updating of the plan every five years.
