MEDIA RELEASE - Town of Hanover Supports Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action
HANOVER, ON – At their September 6, 2022 meeting, Hanover Council unanimously endorsed a Land Acknowledgement Policy to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, which includes an approved statement to be read during council meetings, special events such as opening or dedication ceremonies, posted at municipal publicly accessible buildings and for inclusion in corporate documents such as the Strategic Plan.
“Hanover is committed to supporting and putting a respectful lens on Truth and Reconciliation amongst our staff and community”, noted Mayor Sue Paterson. “A Land Acknowledgment statement demonstrates our commitment to increase awareness and show respect for Indigenous peoples, both in the past and present, and for their relationship with their Territories”.
As well, Hanover is flying the Every Child Matters flag outside the Civic Centre for the month of September. A moment of silence will be observed during Hanover’s September 19th Council meeting and staff and elected officials will be encouraged to wear orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on September 30th.
Residents can also drop by the Hanover Public Library to view their display or pickup a list of suggested readings by Indigenous authors.
